1987 Subaru BRAT: Day 2

Today my main goal was to reveal all the rot that has occured over the last 22 years (weird saying that since I’m only 23…) I guess you can say this was a good lesson about rust. What looks like a little rust is probably a lot more. While there was a bit of rust, the majority of it wasn’t structural, only cosmetic. I was relieved when I realized this.

Anyways, what I first did was put tape around any rust. Then, I went back with a wrench and proceeded to push into the rust. If it didn’t go around where, I gave it a quick spray of spray paint. If the wrench did go threw when I pressed, I dug around for a bit. The rocker panel ended up being the worse – it was nearly entirely rusted. Scared, I took a look up inside and luckily, thats all it got. After digging around, I sprayed it and moved on. I did this all the way around the car. This was to remind me where the rot was for when I come back with a grinder to cut off the remaining rust and to repair it.

While the car was up in the air, I took the opportunity to look under the car for the first time. Wow. My 2005 Subaru has more rust underneath it than the BRAT. I think the frequent C.V. boots ripping had something to do with it… considering the whole car was covered in a nice black oil underneath.

I also took notice of all the skid plates this had – its interesting to see the protection considering its not a heavy duty off-road vehicle. Sure, the BRAT was popular in California and stuff, but I’d expect skid plates on vehicles that frequent off-road parks or something of that sort. with independent suspension and dual range transfer case – I’m sure it would be a competent off-road vehicle despite it being a unibody truck.

I posted a thread on nasioc (click here to go to it). It’s great to see such knowledgeable people helping me out on my journey.

1987 Subaru BRAT

I picked up a 1987 Subaru BRAT. For those that don’t know, the Subaru BRAT (Bi-Recreational All-Terrain Vehicle) was pretty popular in its day for being a little truck that. At the time, it had technology not common in most 4WD vehicles. Although there were a good amount of BRAT’s sold, like most Subaru’s, they fell victim to rust.

The Subaru BRAT had one crucial design flaw that made them go to the junk yard well before they had to – rear strut mount welds. The rear struts mounts are welded onto an L shaped bracket that sadly allowed water/salt to sit behind the welds. This in turn rotted the fender wells in the bed. My BRAT is no different. I consider it the most damaged part on the vehicle.

However, that isn’t all the rust. The driver side door has been completely rusted out on the lower corner. A new door is a must. There is also a little frame rot that needs to be replaced. It’s just something that with time and hard work, it can be fixed.

After running into a little bit of a fiasco with the title, I managed to track down the original owner and get the title signed. He told me some history about the truck. It’s been across the U.S. four times, lived most of its life in Mississippi, had the rear chrome piece broke off by kids on Halloween, leaks some oil and just had a new exhaust, catalytic convertor, rotor/distributor and wires put on it before he sold it. The one fender is darker than the rest and he said that’s how he purchased it from the dealer – he guesses it was damaged prior to him getting it.

Sadly, the project has been on hold for the last 6-7 months. I just got married and moved into a house so I now have a place to store and work on the BRAT – under a carport. The first thing I did was checkout the rust and underneath the vehicle – I was surprised that it wasn’t worse. I also dropped a battery in it to check for leaks. After letting it idle for a good 20-30 minutes, I looked under the car – NOTHING. Not as so much as a little drop. I then drove the car back and forth in the parking lot – in and out of 4WD and everything went smoothly. It runs/idle’s great for being a year and a half old gas.

I also wanted to take notice of the oil pressure, RPM’s at idle, and engine temperature before ripping the engine out. While it was running, I rinsed out the engine bay. It had a ton of pine needles, leaves, etc – great for allowing rust to start eating away at the metal. I washed it, but the clear coat is so far gone its beyond help. It will get repainted the original color it was from factory.

Another reason it sat for so long was because I was debating what I wanted to do with it. Drop a WRX drivetrain in it? Lift it and create an off-road beast? After a long 6-7 months thinking about – I decided to pretty much keep it how it was from factory. For one, it’s the cheapest. Two, it’s the easiest. Three, it’s much more badass. It’s not often you see you a BRAT and when you do, it’s usually lifted or it has a STi drivetrain in it so I decided to keep it as it is since 4WD lo and hi works and the engine runs fantastic.

I don’t plan on restoring this to show-room quality but I also don’t plan on driving it every day. If there is a truck show in the area, I’ll enter it to represent Subaru. If there is a Subaru show in the area, I’ll enter it just because I’m sure I’d be the only one and I’m sure a lot of people would ask questions about it.

Ton of new goodies!

Excuse me if this post is somewhat incoherant, as its past my bedtime!

Over the past few days, I have updated this site with a ton of new goodies.  I’m working on getting the neat Flash MP3 player to work (think: Bad Religion, AC/DC, Rage Agains The Machine, Biggie, etc.) so I can have some kick ass music playing.

I’ve also added a link to my LinkedIn.com profile.  If you would like to network, let me know.  I’m always interested in making new contacts in the industry.  I’ve also started a photo gallery on the site.  Right now, I only have about 300 pictures up, and 150 of those being completely and utterly crappy shots.  I’ll filter the crap shots out over the next week or so.

I’ve also posted two product reviews that have been published and a tutorial for Magento site admins.

Now, onto the more interested stuff…

Over the next few weeks, I’m planning on creating a lightbar for my car.  After talking with Matt, I decided to go with two driving lights and two fog lights.  Sure, I already have fog lights on my car… but I like how my car looks with fog light covers on, so I’m willing to shell out some quid to get some new fog lights.

I’m going to borrow the design from a fellow 2.5 RS’er, however, I plan on setting the driving lights just above the headlights and the fog lights just below the headlights.

Both new 2008 Subarus OUT!

STPR was a blast! With the exception of being miserably hot, dusty, and over crowded, it was a success.  With rallying being introduced into the X-Games, it seems like rallying in the States is finally taking off.

This year was the introduction of a super special stage at STPR.  It was pretty cool to see cars trek around in the dust for a minute and 40 seconds.  I can’t wait ’till next year to see it again!

We got news that BOTH 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI’s were OUT.  Both had CATASTROPHIC REAR END SUSPENSION FAILURE.  Ken Block was out after that.  However, I guess Travis’ car was repaired… just in time for him to roll it.
